The saddle ring and short hand guard on this carbine would probably indicate earlier manufacture. Early 1898 carbines had the saddle ring, but later production guns did not. However, later replacement stocks for ’96 carbines DID NOT have a provision for the saddle ring. Most Model 1896 carbines had a saddle ring. This gun is the short type (about 6.75” from rear to barrel band) used in early production guns.
